The Airbrush Tattoo Business: Is It For You?

Are you looking to start an airbrush tattoo business? Are you a charity looking to put together a small booth to raise some money? Or are you looking to make a steady income off of your booth?

Whatever your needs, we can help.  I run the site theweekendworker.com.  I have been in the airbrush tattoo business for almost 6 years. In that time I have discovered and learned as much as anyone can (well…there is always more to learn!).

I wrote a guide called “How To Run A Weekend Airbrush Tattoo Booth”, I wrote it because I noticed the lack of uniform and concrete information out there.  It has been accepted very well! I receive a lot of questions every day about it and I continue to build the amount of

Here is a common question I get:

Do I have to have training to be an airbrush tattoo artist?

The answer to this is no. Some might tell you that you need to be “trained”, well this is just so you pay them $300+!

I can tell you from personal experience that no prior airbrushing or art skills are needed.  I started out just like anyone else would, I wanted to own an airbrush tattoo booth.  I wanted to make the kind of money they did. My dad had an old airbrush and compressor and he let me use it one day.  At first I was a bit shaky, I couldn’t figure out how to hold the airbrush, I spent a few hours with it and by the end of the day I was airbrushing like a “pro”.  One day. One day to learn how to airbrush, and spraying an airbrush tattoo is no harder!

I spent a large portion of may airbrush tattoo “career” finding out what works, what doesnt work.  I spent twice as much money as I needed to, because of ridiculously overpriced ad-dons and junk “systems”.

During the past 5 years I have routinely sought out the best equipment and best supplies.  I then put this information into my easy to understand guide.

My e-guide will tell you exactly what to do in order to be a great airbrush tattoo artist.  It will guide you thru the process of buying equipment to booking shows.

Todays Tip: Booking Shows!

When booking shows you are want to find events that are firstly, inexpensive to enter, you don’t want to be spending $600 just to go and setup for one day, you want it more like $15-$100 to setup, this will dramatically lower your costs and allow you to make a much higher profit, and  second you need to locate shows that you are pretty sure will have lots of kids running around.  Now most shows have kids, but you need to look for shows that are focused towards kids.  But as long as you don’t book a show at a biker rally then you will be fine. (actually biker rallies can be good, they tend to be good tippers!)

You want a show that will give you the most amount of time to work as well.  If you have the choice between a show that is 5 hours long and one that is 10 hours long, take the 10 hour one.  This means you have 5 more hours to pull in money.

As long as you think about each show and how it will be then you wont go wrong, just don’t book whatever comes your way.  UNLESS! Sorry didn’t mean to shout, but this is an important point.  In my e-guide I suggest you take as many shows as you can your first year.  This way you can get your foot in the door and you will have first refusal next year.

If you are in a show this year, most show promoters will give you a chance at first refusal, meaning that they will ask you before they ask any other airbrush tattoo artists.
